This page is for local Houston and East Texas residents.

Snakes often journey into neighborhoods chasing a food source such as lizards, frogs, and mice. If a food source is prevalent they will stick around.  From the snakes perspective a neighborhood has far fewer predators to deal with and often times are virtual buffets for the snakes.

Snakes in Houston use our "bayou city" bayous as their highway system and often can be found in big numbers right downtown! If you live near a bayou or adjacent to one it is very likely you may encounter a snake. Keep in mind the snake is more than likely passing through and will literally eat and run or in most cases simply run when spotted by a human. Humans are the ultimate predator and snakes fear us much more than we fear them.

If you encounter a snake in your yard just slowly back away and leave them alone and they will leave. However if a food source is abundant they may stick around.

Two things can be done to discourage snakes from hanging around

First, most important is keeping yard/property mowed and free of debris including stacked lumber, tree trimmings, logs, etc. these are places to hide for the snakes and their prey.

Second, is common mothballs the smell will deter not only snakes but their prey as well.

Thomas will be happy to I.D. any snake via email picture.
