After year’s of keeping reptiles we have found one important aspect (often overlooked) in keeping reptiles successfully is providing adequate “hide” areas.
Reptiles by nature are very secretive creatures, many have adapted/evolved to a “hide” lifestyle. Each species is different, but all in captivity will benefit from one thing and that is several secure “hides” offering not only temperature and humidity gradients but security, just like in humans “stress” is the number one killer of reptiles.
For years we used cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, etc. Easily replaced when soiled and basically free but then saving them required time, effort and space. Also being very thin flimsy cardboard none of these items although effective ever lasted that long, requiring constant changes and then sizing and looks become an issue ... it became a bit frustrating.
Many plastic or ceramic hides are nice but are expensive and are very often unnatural in design or real usability, and some are almost impossible to clean.
Snake Toobs are all natural in texture and design, and consistent in size and looks. Making them a very practical inexpensive effective reptile hide.
Our Toobs are/were originally designed for the shipping industry they are very heavy duty wound cardboard (Kraft paper)shipping tubes, converted to Snake Toobs. Not only do our Toobs provide a natural safe secure “hide” area; we have adhered a 2 inch strip of 50 grit sand onto one end of each Toob. This process is done individually by hand with a non-toxic, all natural, completely safe adhesive and cleaned sterilized paving sand. It provides an all natural rough area to aid in the natural shedding process of all reptiles, and is our signature design/method.
Increase the livable/usable cage space for your reptiles by using several toobs under a substrate creating an entire sub-terrainium level basically doubling or tripling a cage’s usable living space.
Stack, Snake Toobs under or over a heat source and achieve an all natural labyrinth of temperature gradients for your reptile to explore and choose from, all the while increasing the habitat’s usable size.
Being heavily wound cardboard, Snake Toobs last and can even be sprayed with water to raise humidity if needed without falling apart, and they can also be sprayed with a safe/mild disinfectant cleaner and wiped down or quick rinsed for clean ups.
When heavily soiled simply replace them with another just like it!
This consistency also adds to the security/well being of any captive reptile.
Depending on condition of Toob, species, and setup we replace ours about every 3 to 4 months.
Our Toobs are ideal for all colubrids, leopard geckos, and many other reptiles.
They simply love them.
Being cardboard (Kraft paper) they hold temps and humidity very well. They are ECO friendly, and affordable enough to simply discard when heavily soiled.
At this time our Snake Toobs come in 2 inch diameter and in 6 or 12 inch lengths. All of our Toobs will have our signature 2 inch strip of 50 grit paving sand adhered onto one end of each Toob.
Our 2 inch Toob is the perfect size for most lizards & geckos, sub to adult colubrids corns, kings, and milks, etc. up to about 4 ft. but, not for say a sub or adult ball python as they could get stuck being such a naturally heavy bodied species. Generally snakes up to 4 ft. and larger get 3, 4, or even 6 inch diameter Toobs, We will be offering these sizes very soon.
Measure your reptile’s diameter (girth) and buy your Toobs accordingly.
Up to 4 inch girth snake but not much larger, would get a 2 inch Toob, this leaves some room for them to coil. (A 2 inch toobs girth is 6 inches.) The bigger the snake/reptile the bigger the Toob.
Try different lengths and sizes and see what your reptile prefers.
